NIST Joins NSF-Led Partnership to Support Next-Generation Communications Technology

NIST is excited to announce a new public-private partnership with the National Science Foundation, industry, federal agencies, and the research community to accelerate research on Resilient and Intelligent Next-Generation Systems (RINGS)!  The RINGS program will bring $40 million in funding over three years starting in 2022 to multidisciplinary collaborative projects that may have a potentially significant impact on emerging Next Generation (NextG) wireless communications. Through the RINGS program, NIST will further leverage its existing partnerships to enhance the work of the NextG Channel Model Alliance through the usage of our state-of-the-art testbed facilitiesProposals will be accepted through July 29, 2021.

Public Comments on Cyber Supply Chain Risk Management Practices for Systems and Organizations (Draft NIST SP-800-161, rev 1)

NIST is seeking comments on a major revision to Cyber Supply Chain Risk Management Practices for Systems and Organizations (SP 800-161).  The updates are designed to better help organizations identify, assess and respond to cyber supply chain risks while still aligning with other fundamental NIST cybersecurity risk management guidance. 

Based on comments received by June 14, 2021, NIST anticipates releasing a second draft in September 2021 and a final version by April 2022.  See the publication details for a copy of the draft and instructions for submitting comments.

Securing the 5G Supply Chain through Measurement Workshop

NIST will host a virtual workshop on measurement-based approaches for authenticating 5G hardware on May 18th – 19th. Lisa Friedersdorf, from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy is the keynote speaker.  The workshop will assess the state-of-the-art, identify unmet needs, and explore industry-led adoption paths. Attendees’ input will inform national policy and strategic planning, guide new discretionary research, and foster interagency and industrial partnerships. The findings will be summarized in a NIST Special Report tentatively planned for public release in August.

NIST Cybersecurity for IoT Program Upcoming Events

The NIST Cybersecurity for IoT Program is hosting a series of roundtables on June 8, 15, 22 and 29 at 1:00pm ET on the non-technical capabilities needed across multiple sectors to make IoT devices securable. Each event requires separate registration.


2021 Disaster Resilience Symposium

The NIST Engineering Laboratory will be hosting its third annual symposium virtually on July 20-21, 2021 featuring the Disaster Resilience Grant Research Program recipients from 2019

Recipients will present their research and findings from their awards from topics related to Disaster and Failure StudiesNational Earthquake Hazards Reduction ProgramWind Impact Reduction, and Reduced Ignition of Building Components in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Fires Project
