NIST's Impact on Innovation and Everyday Life

NIST recently posted a story about the impacts that the agency has had since it was created in 1901.  NIST's research to advance measurement science, standards and technology have had significant impacts on American innovation and quality of life over its nearly 120 years.

Global City Teams Challenge
Smart and Secure Cities and Communities Challenge Expo

On July 10-12, 2019 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, teams of innovators and municipal governments around the world who are using technology to address challenges such as disaster response, energy management and mass transit improvement will share their work at the Global City Teams Challenge/Smart and Secure Cities and Communities Expo.

The event is hosted by NIST and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), and the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T). 


Disaster Resilience Symposium

NIST will hold its second annual Disaster Resilience Symposium on August 7-8, 2019 at the NIST campus in Gaithersburg, MD. The symposium will feature presentations from over a dozen grant awardees funded by NIST and from NIST researchers on the latest findings from related internal projects. Topics will include disaster and failure studies, earthquake engineering, wind engineering, community resilience, and wildland-urban interface fires.

Release of NIST Report: Managing Internet of Things (IoT) Cybersecurity and Privacy Risks

NIST has released a new report, Considerations for Managing Internet of Things Cybersecurity and Privacy Risks (NISTIR8228) outlining these risks and some considerations for mitigating them.  

This is the first in a series of documents that NIST is developing to help IoT users protect themselves.  

NIST plans to release a baseline document for public comment in July 2019 and then hold a workshop on August 13th to gather additional feedback.  

 

CONGRESSIONAL HEARINGS

Election Security

On June 25, 2019, Dr. Charles Romine, Director of the Information Technology Laboratory testified before the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Subcommittee on Investigations & Oversight and Subcommittee on Research & Technology.  The purpose of the hearing was to review the security of U.S. election system technologies, including, but not limited to: voter registration databases, electronic poll books, voting machines, and vote tabulators.  View of copy of his testimony or the archived webcast
