Return on Investment Initiative

On December 6, 2018, NIST released a draft green paper detailing steps the federal government intends to take to modernize the U.S. system of technology transfer and innovation for the 21st century.

Earlier this year, President Trump directed NIST in the President’s Management Agenda to work with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to speed the transfer of federally funded R&D to the private sector. NIST drafted the green paper to advance the President’s Lab-to-Market cross agency priority goal through the Return on Investment Initiative for Unleashing American Innovation.

Privacy Framework Request for Information

NIST is developing a voluntary privacy framework, in collaboration with private and public-sector stakeholders, to help organizations: better identify, assess, manage, and communicate privacy risks; foster the development of innovative approaches to protecting individuals’ privacy; and increase trust in products and services. 

NIST requests input on the Privacy Framework: An Enterprise Risk Management Tool via a Request for Information until 5:00 PM ET on December 31, 2018.

SI Redefinition

Historic Vote Ties Kilogram and Other Base Units to Natural Constants

On November 16, 2018, delegates representing 60 countries voted in Versailles, France to transform the International System of Units (SI) by agreeing on a new definition for the kilogram.   For the first time, all units of measurement will be defined by unchanging fundamental properties of nature rather than physical artifacts.   <<READ MORE>>

2018 Malcom Baldrige National Quality Award Winners

On November 15, 2018, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that the 2018 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award will be awarded to the following organizations:

A presidential-level honor, the award recognizes exemplary U.S. organizations and businesses that demonstrate an unceasing drive for radical innovation, thoughtful leadership, and administrative improvement.

The 2018 Baldrige Awards will be presented at a ceremony on April 7, 2019, during the Baldrige Program’s 31st annual Quest for Excellence® conference, which will be held in National Harbor, Maryland.

Earthquake Hazards Legislation to President Trump for Signature

On November 27, 2018, Congress passed S.1768, the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) Reauthorization Act of 2018 and sent the bill to President Trump for signature on November 29th.  The bill provides the first reauthorization for NEHRP in 15 years and prescribes improvements in earthquake preparedness and the development of a five-year management plan for the Advanced National Seismic System.  The four NEHRP agencies (NIST, FEMA, USGS, and NSF) work in close coordination to improve the Nation’s understanding of earthquake hazards and to mitigate their effects.
