NIST Seeks
Information on the Semiconductor Industry Workforce
NIST
has issued a Request
for Information, seeking feedback on the “scope and sufficiency of efforts
to educate, train and attract” a workforce that can support current and future
needs for a strong domestic semiconductor industry. Responses are due by August 15, 2018.
2018 NIST Disaster Resilience Symposium
The Engineering Laboratory at
NIST will host a symposium featuring the 2016 Disaster Resilience Grant
Research Program recipients, which will be held at NIST on August 14-15, 2018.
The symposium will feature presentations
from over a dozen grant awardees funded by NIST and some of the ongoing
research from related NIST projects. Research topics will focus on disaster and
failure studies, earthquake engineering, wind engineering, community
resilience, and wildland-urban interface fires. More

National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) 2018 Conference
The NICE Conference and Expo will be held November 6-7, 2018 in Miami, FL, at the Hyatt Regency. The conference will feature thought leaders from academia, industry, government, and non-profits who are addressing the cybersecurity education, training, and workforce needs of the nation. Registration is now open.
Election Security
Preparations: Federal and Vendor Perspectives
On July 11, 2018, Dr. Charles Romine, Director of the Information Technology Laboratory at NIST
testified before the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration. The
purpose of the hearing was to examine election security preparations from both federal
and industry perspectives.

Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities: Lessons Learned from Spectre and Meltdown
On July 11, 2018, Donna Dodson, Director of the National Cybersecurity
Center of Excellence and NIST Chief Cybersecurity Advisor testified before the
Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee. The purpose of the hearing was to review
cybersecurity issues raised in response to the Spectre and Meltdown
vulnerabilities, such as challenges with conducting complex coordinated
vulnerability disclosure and supply chain cybersecurity, and how best to
coordinate cybersecurity efforts going forward.

Using Innovative Technology and Practices to Enhance the Culture of Preparedness
On July 25, 2018, Dereck Orr, Chief of the Public Safety Communications Research Division testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security, Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Communications. The purpose of the hearing was to hear from agencies on their efforts to develop innovative policies and technology to better prepare, equip, and train first responders and the public to mitigate and address the threats we face.
