Three bills were reported favorably out of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee on Tuesday, June 27th.

  • NIST Reauthorization Act of 2018 (H.R. 6229).  This bill supports and strengthens NIST’s critical research programs such as quantum science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and composite materials.
  • National Quantum Initiative Act (H.R. 6227).  This bill would create a 10-year federal effort focused on accelerating quantum science research and development.  It would task the White House with establishing a National Quantum Coordination Office that would work in consultation with Department of Energy, National Science Foundation and NIST.
  • American Space SAFE Management Act (H.R. 6226).  This bill directs the Secretary of Commerce to provide civil space situational awareness and traffic coordination.  The Secretary of Commerce would also submit a report on the role of NIST in the development of civil space traffic coordination standards.

NIST Research Could Bring Down the Cost of Making the Nickel

NIST, in conjunction with the U.S. Mint is working to reduce the cost of materials for the nickel by as much as 40 percent.  Nickels are becoming costly to produce, sometimes costing more than their value.  The data from this research has also produced results that may aid high-tech companies looking for new materials to use in resilient electronics such as phones and laptops.
