Blockchain Technology Report

On January 24, 2018, NIST released a report on blockchain technology, which aims to introduce the concept of blockchain, discuss its use in electronic currency and show its broader applications.  NIST is accepting public comments on this draft report through February 23, 2018.  Please email comments to nistir8202-comments@nist.gov.

NIST’s Consortium for the Advancement of Genome Editing

NIST is establishing the Genome Editing Consortium with the goal of bringing together stakeholders across the genome editing community to identify and address measurement and standards needs to support this technical area.  NIST will accept letters of interest containing required information for participation in this Consortium until January 1, 2020.

Congressional Hearings

American Innovation and Competitiveness Act (AICA)

NIST Director, Dr. Walter Copan testified before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.  The hearing titled, “One Year Later: The American Innovation and Competitiveness Act” focused on the implementation of science and technology policy and program updates that were enacted under this legislation.  The Director of the National Science Foundation, Dr. France Córdova also testified at the hearing.

Blockchain Technology

On February 14, 2018 at 10:00am, Dr. Charles Romine, Director of the Information Technology Laboratory at NIST is scheduled to testify before the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Subcommittee on Oversight.  The purpose of this hearing is to explore the science of blockchain technology and its potential and emerging applications beyond cryptocurrency and financial technology.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program

NIST is soliciting applications from eligible colleges and universities in the U.S. and its territories, nominating undergraduate students to participate in the SURF Program. The SURF Program will provide research opportunities for undergraduate students to work with NIST scientists and engineers, to expose the students to cutting-edge research and promote the pursuit of graduate degrees in science and engineering.  

  • Applications must be received by Monday, February 12, 2018, 11:59 pm.
