NIH has created a new online library of resources to help address the toll COVID-19 has taken on mental health. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the mental health of many people across the country, but some people, including those in racial and ethnic minority communities, are more likely to be affected than others.

CEAL Scientific Pathway adds new clinical trial volunteer
Justice Zimmerman is the newest volunteer participant on CEAL’s Scientific Pathway. She participated in the COVID-19 vaccine trial because, as she explains, “I wanted to do my part in keeping me and peers safe during this difficult time.” She describes her trial experience as overall “super easy and smooth throughout the entire process.” Justice Zimmerman is the daughter of Scientific Pathway member Kanecia Obie Zimmerman, M.D., who is an associate professor of pediatrics at Duke University.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 to October 15
Join the Office of Minority Health (OMH) and other federal partners in observing Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s theme, “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation,” encourages us to ensure that all voices are represented and welcomed to help build stronger communities. It emphasizes the importance of disseminating bilingual health resources.

COVID-19 vaccine helps protect against MIS-C
A new study finds that children ages 5 to 18 who were vaccinated with two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine are 84 percent less likely to develop multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a severe condition that can affect many organs. Children ages 6 months and older should get all recommended doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

At the upcoming American Public Health Association meeting, CEAL will hold a session called “Engaging Communities and Building Trust: Lessons from the NIH’s Community Engagement Alliance (CEAL) Against COVID-19 Disparities.” Speakers are CEAL co-chairs Gary Gibbons, M.D., NHLBI director, and Eliseo Pérez-Stable, M.D., NIMHD director. Panelists include CEAL team researchers and community partners.

Listen to the Sept. 7 virtual town hall, “COVID & Health Disparities Part II: Fighting COVID Through Community Engagement,” organized by CEAL and Medstar Health. Panagis Galiatsatos, M.D., M.H.S., assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, discussed strategies that have helped to increase confidence in the vaccine and the importance of boosters in communities of color.
