As part of its “We Can Do This” campaign, HHS has released a new video: “Ask a Doctor: Why is it important for young children to be vaccinated against COVID?” Check it out to see CEAL Scientific Pathway member and pediatrician, Ilan Shapiro, M.D., explain that COVID-19 can be a very serious illness in children and that COVID-19 vaccines are effective and protect against COVID-19.

The NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health seeks public comment on research gaps, clinical practice needs, and research opportunities to inform research priorities for COVID-19, long COVID, and the health of women. The deadline is May 6.

Welcome Dr. Geeta Krishna Swamy to the CEAL Scientific Pathway
Geeta Krishna Swamy, M.D., has joined the CEAL Scientific Pathway’s team of safety monitors, who serve on institutional review boards or data and safety monitoring boards. Swamy is an associate vice president for research and vice dean for scientific integrity at Duke University. A vaccine researcher, she has worked on data safety monitoring boards to see if vaccine side effects were in the expected range.

Calculating isolation time
An easy-to-use COVID-19 quarantine and isolation calculator is now available to help people exposed to or testing positive for COVID-19 figure out their next steps. It describes precautions to take to protect loved ones and help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Also available is a new COVID-19 self-checker tool to help people decide when to get tested and seek medical care.

CDC data on children show importance of vaccination
CDC’s Data Tracker now has information about children and vaccines. Recent data shows that infants and children were hospitalized at higher rates with Omicron than when the Delta variant was dominant. However, children who received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine were less likely to be infected or hospitalized for COVID-19 during Omicron, compared with unvaccinated children.

COVID-19 Gamechangers: Trusted Messengers Giving Communities a Boost!

On April 20, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities and the HHS Office of Minority Health co-hosted the “COVID-19 Gamechangers: Trusted Messengers Giving Communities a Boost!” Twitter chat. During the event, participants discussed the benefits of including trusted messengers in community outreach and shared resources they’ve produced to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
