Not only has COVID-19 revealed long-standing inequities in health care for communities of color, the disease has also brought to light wide disparities in access to mental health services. CEAL teams in Tennessee and elsewhere have found that issues such as anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide, and fear of getting sick from the virus are stopping people from getting COVID-19 testing or vaccines, and teams are finding alternative ways to reach people. This conversation featured Bishop T.D. Jakes, Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, Dr. Reed Tuckson, and a diverse lineup of powerful faith and community leaders who discussed vaccine education and access and how to make our communities healthier.
When asked about his message for those still on the fence about vaccines, Bishop T.D. Jakes said, “If you were getting a heart transplant, you wouldn't go to your mayor. Let’s go to the professionals who really do this for a living ... Make a decision that is health conscious and not only for your own health, but the health of other people is considered ... That's a very important step."
