On Monday, August 25, National Instiuttes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya, M.D., Ph.D., published a statement about the support of international research and global collaborations. 

He wrote: “NIH is establishing a set of fundamental principles to guide our research collaborations abroad.

1. All research supported at international sites should have a clear scientific rationale to be conducted in a foreign country rather than in the United States.
2. All research supported at international sites should have direct potential to generate knowledge applicable to understanding, improving, or protecting the health of Americans."

Specialized NOFOs Participating in the Collaborative International Research Project (PF5)

Beginning with application due dates on or after September 25, 2026, applicants proposing foreign collaborations to one of the participating specialized NOFOs listed on this page can leverage the application forms and structure of the Collaborative International Research Program (PF5) Parent Announcement, but follow the due dates, opportunity requirements, review criteria, and other aspects of the specialized NOFO-of-interest.

• Instructions for how to leverage the PF5 Parent to apply to a specialized NOFO are found on the PF5 Activity Code website.

New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) support the replacement, reduction, and refinement of animal use in safety and risk assessment for human disease. They have the potential to enhance the mechanistic understanding of human biology, disease pathogenesis, and treatment response. This workshop will discuss the current and future applications of NAMs across the safety, efficacy, and disease modeling.

NIH has published a summary of the responses to the Request for Information posted in June about a proposal to cap the number of grants per principal investigator. About 40% opposed the proposal, 32% expressed mixed reviews, 27% supported it, and 1% were neutral.

On August 27, the National Institutes of Health released an RFI seeking public input on a new policy proposal requiring summary level study results from NIH-supported clinical research to be shared with participants of those studies. NIH is also seeking input on areas for which supplemental guidance would enable successful implementation with minimal administrative burden.
