Favorable initial results from an NCI-supported trial (NCT05078866) of the Nous-209 neoantigen vaccine (manufactured by Nouscom) for Lynch Syndrome patients are reported in the January 16 issue of Nature Medicine. The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center scientists leading the trial found good safety and immune response in participants. Investigators are now working toward testing the vaccine in a larger trial.

NCI-supported scientists at the University of Pennsylvania and Mayo Clinic identified two new biomarker proteins in blood that are elevated in early-stage pancreatic cancer patients compared with healthy volunteers. Combined with known markers, the four-marker panel detected pancreatic cancer with a 91.9% accuracy across all stages and 87.5% accuracy for early-stage disease, with a 5% false positive rate. Results were published in Clinical Cancer Research (online first, January 29).

A follow-up of participants in the ASPREE (Aspirin in Reducing Event in the Elderly) trial of adults aged 70 years and older who took either low dose aspirin or a placebo for nearly 5 years showed no difference in risk of cancer incidence after almost 9 years total.  An initial increase in deaths from cancer seen in those taking aspirin after 5 years of treatment was no longer observed.  The trial took place in Australia and the United States, with lead investigators from Monash University. Results were published in the January 29 issue of JAMA Oncology.

Results from the WISDOM study, funded in part by NCI’s Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP), are featured in the most recent issue of NIH Research Matters. The study found that risk-based breast cancer screening was as safe and effective as annual mammograms.
