Cancer Screening with Multicancer Detection Tests: A Translational Science Review
In this review in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, NCI authors describe how multicancer detection (MCD) tests, while easy to administer, require much more evidence from prospective clinical trials before being ready for widespread population-based screening. These trials, including from NCI’s Cancer Screening Research Network, aim to provide some of this much-needed data to evaluate MCD test efficacy, accuracy, and the potential harms of overdiagnosis and overtreatment.

Frameshift Mutations in Peripheral Blood as a Biomarker for Surveillance of Lynch Syndrome
In this article in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, NCI’s Robert Shoemaker Ph.D., Song Yurong, Ph.D., and Holli Loomans-Kropp, Ph.D., M.P.H., et al., identified a peripheral blood biomarker for surveillance of people with Lynch Syndrome. Cancers in people with Lynch syndrome show high microsatellite instability and frame shift mutations at specific spots in the genome. After further development and validation, this biomarker looking for those genomic changes may help reduce the frequency of invasive screening needed for Lynch Syndrome mutation carriers and provide feedback on the effectiveness of new interventions.
