Collaboration Spurs Rapid Growth and Progress in Cardio-Oncology Research
Cardio-oncology research looks at cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity, or damage to the heart and cardiovascular system (including heart valves and vessels) that can occur during or after cancer treatment. Over the last decade, efforts from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in this area, as well as the field in general, have expanded significantly.

Career Development Award for Community Oncology and Prevention Research Created to Honor Worta McCaskill-Stevens, M.D.

NCI Director Monica Bertagnolli, M.D., announced the creation of the NCI Worta McCaskill-Stevens Career Development Award for Community Oncology and Prevention Research (K12). This training award is named after medical oncologist Worta McCaskill-Stevens, M.D., who leads the NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP). NCORP is a national network that brings cancer clinical trials and care delivery studies to people in their own communities through more than 1,000 medical practices at diverse, community-based hospitals and practices. The award is expected to be published in April 2024, but the Notice of Intent is already published.

David S. Alberts, M.D., a scientist who was an early and unending advocate for cancer prevention medicine, passed away in late July. He will always have the deep gratitude of the NCI Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP).

ADVANCE Predoctoral T32 Training Program to Promote Diversity in Health Disparities Research, Preventive Interventions, and Methodology (T32, Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
NIH is soliciting T32 applications to train predoctoral scholars from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in prevention relevant fields, in three integrated areas: health disparities/health equity research; development and implementation of multi-level preventive interventions; and methods for the design and analysis of studies to evaluate multi-level preventive interventions. Although this NOFO does not allow appointed trainees to lead an independent clinical trial, it does allow them to get research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor.

Chief, Chemopreventive Agent Development Research Group: Applications Being Accepted
DCP is seeking an innovative and energetic leader to serve as its Chief, Chemo-preventive Agent Development Research Group (CADRG). Chief of the DCP CADRG serves as a senior scientific authority within DCP and NCI. Responsibilities include leading a team of scientific and administrative staff, establishing the overall scientific and research agenda for the CADRG, overseeing ongoing research within the Cancer Immunoprevention Laboratory at the Frederick National Lab for Cancer Research, and supporting an extramural granting program that furthers prevention and interception research within the cancer research community. Robert H. Vonderheide, M.D., D.Phil., of the University of Pennsylvania, will be giving a lecture entitled, “Opportunities for Cancer Immune Health, Prevention, and Interception,” on Wednesday, September 13 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. ET as part of the NCI DCP Immunology Interest Group Seminar Series.
