Hispanic heritage
Family matters
Celebrate la buena
salud (good health) with your family and friends during National Hispanic
Heritage Month (September 15 through October 15). You can do a lot to inspire the people you
love to eat better and move more.
Overweight and obesity affect more than 3 in 4 Hispanic adults
ages 20 and older in the United States, and more than one-third are obese.[1]
Almost 4 in 10 Hispanic children ages 6 to 19 are overweight or obese, and obesity
affects more than 1 in 5.[2]
Extra weight may lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure,
stroke, and some types of cancer.
It can be hard to get enough activity and eat well if you
work long hours or the stores near you don’t sell vegetables and fruits.
Talk to your family and friends about working together to
build a healthier life. You can start by using the advice, tips, and tools in
WIN’s brochures and tip sheets. You can find these items and others in Spanish
on the WIN website at http://www.win.niddk.nih.gov/publications/#spanish:
