Stabilized Norovirus Vaccine-like Particles (VLPs): A Next-Generation Vaccine Approach

Recent estimates from the Centers for Disease Control (2020) indicate that roughly half of all foodborne disease outbreaks in the U.S. are caused by noroviruses.

Researchers at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) have engineered enhanced virus-like particles (VLPs) with the potential for a more effective and robust response against norovirus infection. These VLPs are designed to remain intact even when faced with the body's immune responses, which may be particularly helpful in individuals with more robust immune systems who have shown limited responses to traditional vaccines. Additionally, these modified VLPs may be more resistant to degradation, making them a more reliable and durable solution in for large-scale immunization efforts.
