America’s Amish Romance

Beginning in the late 1990s, a new, somewhat unexpected kind of romance novel burst upon the American literary scene: the Amish Romance.

Signaling a shift in the zeitgeist, the Amish Romance found a different way to pull at the heartstrings. Instead of following conventional approaches of steamy love stories set in contemporary settings or complicated times, it focused instead on traditional values, faith and rural communities. The bodice-ripper was replaced by intact plaid and a covered head, on a quilt or in a horse-drawn buggy. Love is love, right?

With a mixture of idealization and a yearning, this genre expresses a fascination with a religiously-centered community that sets itself outside of modernity, embracing what appeared to be a more simple life, eschewing modern technology. The stories focus on characters and situations which gave voice to moral choices and conflicts of faith while searching for love, companionship and fulfillment.

In this issue of Collections Connections, we are going to explore this fascination with the world of the Amish by exploring some of the most recognized authors in this romance genre so popular among NLS patrons.

And in our new Collections Connections Audio Supplement, Rheagan Martin interviews NLS’ Megan McArdle and Katie Dunneback, senior selection librarians in the Collection Development Section, and Katie Rodda, senior accessible music librarian, in an animated, book club-style conversation about Amish romances, centered around the story collection "An Amish Reunion" by four popular authors. Rheagan also speaks to beloved NLS narrator Laura Giannarelli about her unique experiences in recording romance novels for our service. You can access the CC Audio Supplement here: Collections Connections Audio Supplement: February 2026 Passionate Pages of Romance DB133805

We’ll begin with the volume explored in the CC Audio Supplement:

www.loc.gov/item/2021688665

The Pennsylvania Dutch culture, which is now over three centuries old and still evolving, is an American hybrid creation put together from Continental Europe, British Isles and American building blocks in Southeastern Pennsylvania. While this culture is a unit linguistically, and in most other ways, it is divided down the middle by religion. The "two worlds" are those of the "Plain Dutch" — Amish, Mennonites, and Brethren — and the much larger world of the Lutheran and Recorded churches of the German and Swiss Reformates.
