Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz Letters

NEW: Letters from Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz

In celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we’re launching a campaign highlighting the work and relationships of one of the most significant women in 20th-century art: Georgia O’Keeffe.

Between 1929 and 1947, painter Georgia O’Keeffe and her husband, the photographer and art impresario Alfred Stieglitz, each corresponded separately with their mutual friend, the filmmaker Henwar Rodakiewicz. “Artistic Trio: Georgia O’Keeffe & Alfred Stieglitz letters to Henwar Rodakiewicz” offers insight into their trio of talent and a chance to engage closely with O’Keeffe’s beautiful calligraphy and expressiveness as a writer. Letters reveal her private thoughts about her art, her self-doubts, challenges, and friendships, and her increasing love of the Southwestern landscape and the beauty of the natural world.  Rodakiewicz and Stieglitz write about the community of artists they inhabit as Roadakiewicz establishes his career in film and Stieglitz runs his famed An American Place art gallery in New York.

You can learn more about the relationships of this "Artistic Trio" and the context of their friendships in the curator's essay here. A webinar on the collection recorded by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum also provides background on the fascinating provenance of the letters.

This small campaign will probably go quickly -- Explore and transcribe it here!

Happy transcribing!
