By the People Bulletin

Last week to fill out the By the People survey!

We've extended our survey another week to August 23! Take our 10-minute, anonymous survey to let us know what motivates you to volunteer for By the People: https://www.research.net/r/btp-volunteer-survey. We'll use your feedback to help improve the content we offer, the website features, and the ways we communicate with you. We really appreciate all you do as a volunteer--including sharing your thoughts and ideas with us!

Focus areas for the week

Focus your efforts on reviewing the remaining pages in these projects!

  • Did you know we celebrate Clara Barton's 200th birthday this year? Help mark the occasion by reviewing the remaining ~1,100 pages in the Clara Barton General Correspondence series. Her letters reveal Barton's interest in humanitarian work as well as other social movements including temperance and women's suffrage.
  • A life-long reformer, Lucy Stone fought for women's suffrage and abolition on numerous fronts during her lifetime. Learn more about her circle of correspondents and friends by reviewing the last remaining pages in the following projects:

Your accomplishments

In the last week, volunteers completed review on 3,766 pages! Your efforts to help us complete the remaining pages on several of our long-standing campaigns have been nothing short of incredible. We still have a few weeks left in review month so if you haven't jumped in yet, there's still time.

We've loved hearing from you over the last week on your best review tips and stories. One volunteer, Cyndi, working on Teddy Roosevelt correspondence, wrote to us about a letter that Roosevelt received from Adolph Levy & Son (a men's neckwear company in NYC) in 1901. The letter writer asked Roosevelt if he would give approval to a new line of neck ties inspired by and named after "Teddy." Can you imagine a Teddy Roosevelt-inspired line of ties!?! What an interesting find! What have you found while reviewing? Email us at crowd@loc.gov to let us know!

You're invited: Joint Office Hours with the Smithsonian!

On Friday, August 20th from 3:00-4:00pm EDT, we'll join a special Office Hours with the Smithsonian Transcription Center to talk about all things review! The By the People Community Managers (Lauren, Carlyn, and Abby) will be there as will the Smithsonian Coordinators (Caitlin, Emily). We'll answer your questions and would love to hear from you. Register here if you'd like to attend (select the August 20 option).

Warmly,

Abby & the By the People team
