This Pick of the Week features the Los Angeles band La Santa Cecilia at the Coolidge Auditorium in October of 2017. This band fuses different rhythms, including ranchera, cumbia, and rock, among others. Their lyrics are filled with deep emotions that capture many aspects of Latinos' pluricultural experience in the USA and abroad. Their bilingual songs reflect the duality of a community that has, on one hand, Spanish and, on the other, English. This duality goes beyond language but describes an entirely new culture that grows along the other two's edges. This concert features Mexican songwriter José Alfredo Jimenez's "El último trago." This song reached its popularity when iconic Mexican singer Chavela Vargas performed it, transforming it into an iconic piece of Latin American culture. Grammy award-winning Los Angeles band La Santa Cecilia performs a mix of original songs and old classics. The group's brilliant instrumentalists and expressive lead singer "La Marisoul" create a seductive fusion of styles and influences in songs that are both original and traditional, from rancheras, salsa, cumbia, and boleros to the music of Santana, Ramón Ayala, and Los Alegres de Terán.
