Dear friends of the Hispanic Division,
As fall starts to roll around, we are excited to announce our upcoming events and new web features that we will soon release in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15). During this unique year, we are moving our signature programs to a virtual environment such as the annual Américas Award ceremony, which will premiere online, and an upcoming panel discussion on US Latina(o)/Latinx Civil Rights history, also released digitally.

Important announcement: Library Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Re-branding of Audio Archive
 The Hispanic Division's treasured Archive of Hispanic Literature on Tape (AHLOT) will become the PALABRA Archive effective October 1st, 2020. Look out for the new name launch and the online release of fifty new recordings from this collection. During Hispanic Heritage Month, we will also be releasing the upcoming PALABRA Archive LibGuide, and StoryMap “Traveling Words and Sounds: The PALABRA Archive from the Hispanic Division.”

September 25-27, 2020, 6 P.M. ET on PBS
 National Book Festival occurs during National Hispanic Heritage Month and Hispanic authors have been prerecorded. The 20th annual Library of Congress National Book Festival will be held online September 25-27. A special National Book Festival broadcast will air on PBS on September 27 at 6 P.M. ET.

 This webcast is organized to introduce a related LibGuide created by Hispanic Division Interns, Maria Guadalupe Partida (Texas) and Herman Chavez (Colorado), that brings together a panel of experts and public figures for discussions of civil rights cases such as Mendez v. Westminister and Hernandez v. Texas, which address the rights of individuals in the Latina(o) community. Participants include Philippa Strum, Ignacio Garcia, and Ian Haney Lopez. Material generated in this webcast will enhance online instruction tools currently under development.

We are happy to share the publication of Research Guides related to Hispanic Heritage in the United States, including a general resource guide on the Library’s US Latina(o)/Latinx collections and a subject guide highlighting significant civil rights cases championed by Latina(o) leaders that brought about positive change to the Hispanic-American community.
Pre-recorded video orientation: Learning and Innovation Office presents “Office Hours with the Hispanic Division”
Join Catalina Gómez and Talía Guzmán-González, reference librarians from the Hispanic Division, to learn about resources and services related to our unique collection of materials about and from the Caribbean, Latin America, Portugal, Spain, and Latinx communities. We will share multilingual resources available online to support teaching and learning and will provide ideas on how you can incorporate some of our primary resources in your classes.

The Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress to launch StoryMap “Traveling Words and Sounds. The PALABRA Archive from the Hispanic Division.” This Story Map will be an immersive journey through remarkable Latin American photography and audio recordings from the PALABRA Archive.
