April showers brought May flowers and the May flowers really blossomed!

Happy Thursday, Volunpeers!

May has been an extraordinary month for the By the People project and we couldn’t have done it without YOU. Your contributions are making history and we are pleased to share that you have officially completed 100,000 assets! Way to go!

Two completed campaigns

Your hard work has really paid off! You have completed not one, but TWO campaigns this month: Susan B. Anthony and Walt Whitman. We launched the “Whitman at 200” Campaign in late April 2019, to mark Whitman’s bicentenary (his birthday is May 31st). We launched the “Susan B. Anthony Papers” Campaign on June 4th, 2019 to celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage. Her papers are part of the larger Suffrage topic, which includes materials from her friends and fellow suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Anna Dickinson, Mary Church Terrell, as well as Carrie Chapman Catt, and members of the Blackwell Family, whose papers we launched in April of this year. We can’t wait to bring these transcriptions back to loc.gov to make the collections more discoverable and accessible to all.

New Lomax materials

Also in May, we launched a new project in the Lomax campaign: British Isles, 1950-1958. Consisting of 2500 items, they include correspondence, interview and song transcriptions, and Lomax's field notebooks over 9 years. Be sure to hop over to the British Isles if you want to participate – this project is going fast!

Ready for more review?

When you review (edit or accept) transcriptions, you help us meet our goal of publishing them back on loc.gov. There are a few projects and Campaigns that are so close to being finished, such as the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Papers, Anna Dickinson’s Legal Documents project, and Mary Church Terrell’s Diaries and Journals project! Can you help complete these by the end of June?

Keep up the good work! Stay inside and stay healthy.

In solidarity,

Carlyn & the By the People Team
