Letters About Literature Contest Open for Submissions! The Library of Congress invites students in grades 4 through 12 to enter the 26th annual Letters About Literature national writing contest beginning November 1, 2018. For the first time, letters will be accepted electronically.

Letters About Literature asks students to read a fiction or nonfiction book, book series, short story, poem, essay, or speech and write to the author (living or dead) about how the work affected them personally. Students compete on the state and national level and receive cash prizes of up to $2,000. Depending on the student’s state, deadlines are Dec. 14, 2018, or Jan. 11, 2019. More information about the program, including video guides and detailed instructions for online submissions, can be found at read.gov/letters/. Teachers of grades 4-12 are encouraged to bring Letters About Literature into the classroom. Research shows that children gain greater understanding of what they have read when they are given frequent opportunities to respond to it, especially through writing. The writing response, in turn, helps to develop students’ critical reading and thinking skills. This reading-writing link is at the heart of the Letters about Literature program.

The 2018-19 Letters About Literature contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, which promotes the contest through its affiliate Centers for the Book, state libraries and other organizations.
