The marinera originated on the Peruvian coast and was named “marinera” in 1879 to honor the Peruvian Navy during the War of the Pacific. The music has Spanish, Moorish, Andean, and Gypsy rhythmic influences while the dance includes Spanish, Incan, and African elements and takes the form of a stylized courtship using handkerchiefs.
