The energy and infrastructure sectors are among the top export sectors for the United States with both Canada and Mexico and offer many opportunities for U.S. exporters.
Canada is the top U.S. export market and exporters benefit from similar business practices and a harmonized regulatory environment. Under its 12-year Invest in Canada plan, the Canadian government expects to spend between $15 to $20 billion annually in energy systems, public transit, ports and communication. The Canadian power generation, transmission and distribution market needs total annual imports of over $23 billion, of which the U.S. has the dominant share supplying over $10 billion. New capacities and the modernization of existing ones create annually enormous demands in all types of related equipment, components, and materials. The government portal and the private sector specialized sources list over 100 major infrastructure projects.
Mexico is the second largest U.S. trading partner. In Mexico, infrastructure projects have held a very prominent role in the government’s agenda as they seek to foster economic development and generate employment. Mexico’s Economic Reactivation Agreement envisions over $20 billion in infrastructure investment. In addition, several Mexican state governments that have been elected over the past 18 months—including Nuevo León, Baja California, Sonora, Querétaro and Quintana Roo--have launched their own infrastructure and mobility plans. Projects range from construction of roads and highways to renewal of transportation units, deployment of intelligent transportation systems, modernization and expansion of ports and new interurban train/metro lines.
- The Canadian Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Roadmap has already been the world's first SMR contracted and started construction for commercial operation by 2030 in Ontario. Technologies for two SMRs are in evaluation in New Brunswick, and four selected in Alberta.
- Refurbishment for the life extension of 12 large nuclear reactors is in progress.
- Natural gas-fired and hydropower plant projects, new transmission lines and new or upgrades of local distribution facilities are in progress and planning.
- Smart grid technologies are implemented across all provinces.
- Top Canadian infrastructure projects include public transit in Toronto and Montreal, a new terminal for Canada's biggest port, Vancouver, etc.
- In Mexico, state infrastructure & mobility programs will need a significant commitment of expertise and resources to move ahead. This offers U.S. exporters the chance to explore potential opportunities in a wide array of areas, from design & engineering, to project management, and the supply of tailored equipment and technologies.
- While cost is still a key factor in procurement decisions in Mexico, quality and the reliability of supply chains have become increasingly important considerations in recent years.
Join us on May 18 to learn about the top business opportunities for U.S. exporters in Canada and Mexico's energy and infrastructure sectors and some best practices for doing business in each market. We will also cover logistics considerations.
