Travel & Tourism Update - July 2019

Market of Month - Argentina

Argentina is a very large country (1.1 million square miles) placed in the southern cone of South America. Argentina offers abundant natural resources and is mainly an agricultural country. To the north the tropics, down south the glaciers, on the western side the Andes, and, the Atlantic Ocean to the east.   Argentina is a federal republic with 23 provinces and one federal capital district. The population adds to 39.5 million people and the literate rate is 97%.  A large percentage of Argentines immigrated during the 18th and 19th centuries from Spain, Italy and other European countries. Buenos Aires, the capital city, showcases its buildings with French architecture and has many cultural attractions and together with its suburbs frames the largest estuary named Rio de la Plata (River Plate).

Traveling is part of the Argentine lifestyle, and the United Sates is a popular travel destination for both business and pleasure. As we all know, “promotion” is the key tool for the Travel & Tourism Industry, therefore the presence of U.S. companies visiting and showcasing their products and services, is very helpful, as other European destinations are big competitors.

Based on recent figures of traveling to the United States., Argentina has grown since 2005 double digit numbers, except for 2014 when Argentines and other Latin Americans traveled to Brazil to see the Soccer World Cup. During 2017, over 1 million Argentines traveled to United States with which was nearly 10% growth and a record year!  It is important to note that from December 2013 Argentines had a 35% tax on all purchases made in foreign countries, including all travel services.  This ended in January 2016 with the new Administration. The (projected) total expenditures by Argentines in 2017 was $4,811,000. During 2018, Argentina dropped 2.4% due to the local economic crisis.  Which means that, when this stabilizes, travel & tourism to the United States will resume.

The number of travelers varies depending on the season.  Peak travel times tend to be during the summer holidays (December-February) and winter school holidays (July).  Some also choose to travel during the week of September 21st, as many children receive a spring holiday in addition to their other times off.  The only requirement before entering the United States, in addition to a valid passport, is to obtain a travel visa.

The top destinations frequently visited by Argentines are Florida (particularly Miami and Orlando), New York, California, and Washington, DC.  The U.S. gateways are Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Miami, and New York City, and Los Angeles since December 2018.

Announcing our upcoming Virtual Tourism Fair (VTF) with Portugal that will offer you the opportunity to “virtually” engage with qualified tour operators based Portugal.

Why Portugal? A significant increase in per capita income, the increase of direct flights to the USA, which doubled from 2018 to 2019 and the heavy marketing and promotion efforts by Commercial Service Portugal, focusing on creating awareness of the what the United States have to offer. In 2018 the number of tourists to the USA was 147,000 and our aim is to reach the 200,000 by year end 2019.  To create interest among Portuguese travelers we work closely with the travel and Tourism Media as well as TAP’s inflight magazine to write articles on the various destinations to the USA

Despite the devaluation of the Euro, the competitive airfares and a wider offering of direct flights, make the U.S.A.  a popular destination for Portuguese travelers.  The airlines with direct flights to the USA are:

American Airlines: a seasonal (between May and October) daily direct flight from Lisbon to Philadelphia.

United Airlines:  United Airlines flies daily to Newark and Washington, totaling 14 weekly direct flights to the USA.

Delta Airlines:  Two seasonal direct daily routes to from Lisbon New York and to Atlanta.

TAP-The Portuguese Airlines:  Seven direct flights from Lisbon: to Newark, New York (JFK), Miami, Boston, Washington, Chicago and San Francisco; and two direct flights per week from Porto to Newark. TAP offers in total over 30 weekly direct flights to the USA.

SATA-Azorean Airlines: SATA flies to Boston three times a week, departing from Lisbon and Ponta Delgada, Azores.
