Market Spotlight: Kedah State in Malaysia

Malaysia

Malaysia has taken advantage of their location as a crossroads of trade between the East and the West, using this opportunity to transform the country into a high-tech and competitive nation.  Recently, Malaysia has incorporated a Smart Cities Initiative, encompassing smart governance, mobility, technology, infrastructure, and human capital.  Challenges remain in fully introducing Smart Cities to Malaysia, but progress is continuously being made.

The state of Kedah, located on the West Coast of Malaysia, is one of the country’s leaders in developing green technology-based projects, including those relating to solar power, where U.S. firms have found particular success.

The government will continue to support the growth of green technology as a new development model in enhancing the sustainability and resilience of the country, especially in achieving the target of generating 20 per cent of the country’s electricity through renewable energy by 2025, and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions under the 2015 Paris Agreement.  These efforts dovetail with Malaysia’s overall work to achieve a cleaner environment while also generating “green” employment and economic innovation.  As in the solar power example, U.S. companies possess the technology and skills to help Malaysia achieve its green technology objectives.  The U.S. Commercial Service team at the Embassy stands ready to help you access this growing market.  For more information, please contact Kisok Kumar (kisok.kumar@trade.gov).
