Travel & Tourism Update - May 2019

Market of the Month - Taiwan

Market Summary:

The United States is the top long-haul destination for Taiwan’s outbound travelers.  According to the National Travel and Tourism Office with the U.S. Department of Commerce, the United States welcomed approximately 475,000 Taiwan tourists in 2017, who spent over $2.2 billion on travel tourism goods and services. In 2018, total is approximately 446,800 visitors (per November 2018 data. Taiwan was designated for participation in the visa-waiver program in 2012 and designated for participation in the Global Entry program in 2017.  Since the launch of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program in Taiwan in 2012, Taiwan travel to the United States has increased over 60 percent.  The Taiwan authorities and the American Institute in Taiwan designated 2019 as the U.S.-Taiwan Travel Year, with the goal of maintaining this steady growth in the coming years.

As one of Asia’s few fully developed economies, international travel for both business and pleasure is common. Taiwan’s GDP per capita is one of the highest in Asia at approximately US$24,323 —the median household income of Taiwan travelers to the United States was US$42,910 in 2016.  An increasing share of the population has the means to seek and enjoy leisure travel abroad.  Each year over half of Taiwan’s 23 million people go abroad for business, education, and leisure.

Market Opportunities:

As Taiwan’s travel market matures, international travel is shifting towards Foreign Independent Travelers (FIT), a market sector of individuals who arrange their own variety of special interest tours, flights, car rental, and accommodations.  Because more than 80% of the visitors from Taiwan to the United States are FITs, the demand is expected to grow for niche travel experiences such as sports travel, adventure tours, health and wellness vacations, honeymoon tours, gastronomic holidays, cruise tours, and youth study travel.  Substantial, long-standing people-to-people ties and business links between the United States and Taiwan contribute to Taiwan’s interest in tourism to the United States.

Of the states receiving visitors from Taiwan, California received the most with nearly half of the visitors, followed by Guam, New York, and Nevada.  States like Washington, Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, Hawaii, and Florida are also attracting a growing number of Taiwan visitors.  The top American cities receiving visitors from Taiwan are Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, Las Vegas, Seattle, San Jose, Chicago, Boston, San Diego, Honolulu and Anaheim.

Major Air Routes to the United States and Hubs:

Taiwan maintains good air connections to major U.S. cities with over 800 weekly flights, among which are more than 110 direct flights from Taiwan to several U.S. gateway cities. United Airlines provides daily services to the United States via Japan and operates non-stop service to San Francisco. Two Taiwan carriers, China Airlines and EVA Air provide daily non-stop flights to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, Honolulu, Guam, and Houston.  China Airline launched its new direct flight to Ontario in March 2018.
