The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is providing funding in support of SANEPAR (Companhia de Saneamento do Paraná), a water utility in the Brazilian state of Paraná, for a water reuse project feasibility study. SANEPAR currently invites proposals from interested U.S. firms that are qualified on the basis of experience and capability to carry out the study. The feasibility study will assess initial plant requirements, identify best suited technologies, provide initial designs, and analyze the best rate structure for produced water, among other tasks. The selected U.S. firm will be paid in U.S. dollars from a US$616,951 grant using USTDA funding.

Melbourne Water in the Australian state of Victoria, is launching a competition looking for innovative ways to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions (methane and nitrous oxide) from its wastewater treatment plants. This competition provides the opportunity to submit ideas (from concept to fully developed) to Melbourne Water to reduce emissions and winners will share in a pool of up to AUD200,000. American companies, irrespective of whether they are currently doing business in Australia or not, are invited to compete. The competition opens on October 22, 2018 and the deadline for submissions is at 5pm on December 3, 2018 (AEDT).

The United States, Mexico, and Canada have reached an agreement to modernize the 24-year-old NAFTA into a 21st century, high-standard agreement. The new USMCA will include an Environment chapter.
Key Environment obligations in the agreement include:

Prohibitions on some of the most harmful fisheries subsidies, such as those that benefit vessels or operators involved in illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

New protections for marine species like whales and sea turtles, including a prohibition on shark-finning and commitment to work together to protect marine habitat.

Obligations to enhance the effectiveness of customs inspections of shipments containing wild fauna and flora at ports of entry, and ensure strong enforcement to combat IUU fishing.

First-ever articles to improve air quality, prevent and reduce marine litter, support sustainable forest management, and ensure appropriate procedures for environmental impact assessments.

The U.S. Small Business Administration has awarded $18 million in funding to 47 State international trade agencies through SBA’s competitive STEP program to support export growth among U.S. small businesses.
STEP is designed to meet three distinctive goals: to increase the number of small businesses that export, to increase the value of exports for small businesses, and to increase the number of small businesses that explore significant new trade opportunities. Expanding the base of small business exporters and making the process as easy as possible is a key component of the Administration’s small business strategy.
