International Trade Administration Official Visits ND to Provide Tools to Fight Trade Barriers
Steve Presing, Director of the Trade Agreements and Compliance Division for the International Trade Association's Enforcement and Compliance (E&C) Office (a division within the US Department of Commerce), visited Fargo on April 4-5 as part of the ND Trade Office's Global Business Connections conference. While in town, he also spoke to the North Dakota District Export Council (NDDEC). Presing led a session on trade barriers and what the US Department of Commerce can do to work with foreign governments to help US companies overcome them. Presing stressed the importance of reporting trade barriers even if unsure as to whether Commerce has jurisdiction or not, as they are not able to help with problems that they are unaware exist. The first POC to report trade barriers is local US Commercial Service office (Heather.Ranck@trade.gov). Through Presing's visit and outreach done by the U.S. Commercial Service / ND, the team identified eight new cases of trade barriers that the USDOC is following up on for area companies.

Export Mystery of the Month: Overcoming Unfair Trade Barriers
Each month, we ask local companies to share your best practices as to how you solve common export mysteries. The April mystery involves overcoming unfair trade barriers. Sometimes foreign governments unnecessarily or unfairly regulate imports into their countries to help their local companies and discourage outside competition. These barriers can make exporting into potentially promising markets too expensive or impossible for small companies. If you have any advice as to how you have overcome unfair trade barriers, please email heather.ranck@trade.gov so we can share your insights.
