Help solve export mysteries: Dealing with fraud, dishonesty, and corruption Last month's responses to the the mystery of avoiding cultural clashes in India can be found by clicking here. This month's mystery can make or break an opportunity. Corruption is perceived very differently in many foreign countries compared to the USA. Local business persons recently contacted the U.S. Commercial Service in Fargo having encountered corruption abroad, namely foreign officials taking bribes from other companies and hampering the U.S. company's business prospects. Corruption and bribes are sadly common in many countries, however, this does not mean it is an acceptable or legal practice for American companies. It is essential to be aware of U.S. laws such as the Foreign Corrupt Foreign Practices Act. As such, this month's mystery is what would you do if you found yourself in a situation where a foreign decision-maker was soliciting bribes or accepting bribes from competitors? Please submit answers and comments to Heather.Ranck@trade.gov or Carter.Pedersen@trade.gov.
