The American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the US
Commercial Service led a delegation of 13 U.S. water companies to Lima, Peru
May 21-24. The companies visited various water-related public
facilities in two cities to survey infrastructure and management opportunities.
The goal is to introduce and export new U.S. technology and develop
partnerships to strengthen Peru’s water treatment and distribution
infrastructure.
The delegation of water companies met with Peruvian officials
from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Housing,
Construction, and Sanitation (ProInversión), and the National Water Authority,
among others, to discuss public-private partnership opportunities in the water
and sanitation sector. The delegation also met with local Peruvian companies to
explore business collaborations for long-term infrastructure needs in the water
sector. Of interest are projects in wastewater treatment in rural and urban
areas, increasing potable water supplies to 100 percent of the Peruvian
population, and addressing the damage wrought by the recent natural disasters.
The mission was supported by our U.S. Commercial Service team at the U.S. Embassy, who work every day to support U.S. exporters as the
commercial arm of the U.S.
Department of Commerce. Over 50 one-on-one business meetings occurred between the 13 U.S. delegate companies and Peruvian public and private sector entities.
The
mission ended with a trip to Arequipa (Southern Peru) where the delegation met
local business contacts and public figures. A tour of the Peruvian utility Sedapar was
organized, as well as presentations by the U.S. companies to the local
officials and private sector attendees. The Arequipa Chamber of Commerce
assisted the Commercial Service on this last stop.
The trip underscored the wide range of opportunities for U.S. equipment and technologies. If you'd like to learn more about Peru's water sector, please reach out to your local Trade Specialist for more information and to explore export opportunities for your company.
