Quarterly Newsletter - Autumn 2015
The automotive industry is essential to the U.S.
economy. It is one of the largest employers, supporting more than 8
million U.S. jobs and is the largest manufactured goods export sectors in the
U.S. The U.S. Commercial Service, a division of the U.S. Department of
Commerce, provides this newsletter to companies interested in
enhancing international business development.
UAE’s automotive market is the second largest after Saudi
Arabia in the GCC. Roughly 75% of
consumers are planning automobile purchases in the next calendar year, and
virtually the entire supply of cars and light vehicles are imported. UAE is
also one of the largest importers of used cars becoming a regional hub not only
for cars but also for vehicle parts and components in the entire MENA region. Meanwhile,
the MENA region saw some $3.4B in OE investment in new assembly and related
facilities. With UAE’s strong economic growth, solid household spending and
increased access to vehicle financing, the automotive industry is expect to
remain robust over the coming years. This
positive projection bodes well for U.S. automotive aftermarket and specialty
equipment suppliers. Automechanika Jeddah
(Jan 2016) and Dubai (May 2016) are supported by the U.S. Commercial Service,
providing an excellent platform for building sales in the region. To learn more
about pursuing sales to the UAE and be put in touch with your local Global Automotive
Trade Specialist, contact Lesa.Forbes@trade.gov.

Car Share
Market in Turkey: Turkey’s
first car share operator, Atlagit, established in March 2010, but has since
ceased operation. Similarly, MobiCar
which started in November 2012 has also closed shop. Currently, there are two
car share companies still serving the market: Yoyo and ZipCar.
Yoyo (www.driveyoyo.com) was the second to enter the market
in March, 2012. Today the company serves Istanbul with 54 vehicles. ZipCar Turkey (www.zipcar.com.tr), is operated by Otokoç
Automotive and offers 500 vehicles, also only in the Istanbul region.
Both companies provide valet service and mobile applications,
and are appealing given high vehicle purchase, tax, maintenance and parking
costs in Istanbul. More and more
passengers are getting used to the system and anticipate expansion into other
larger cities such as Ankara and Izmir.
