Moriarty selected as new associate chief counsel for Income Tax and Accounting

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service’s Chief Counsel announced that John Moriarty has been selected as the new associate chief counsel, Income Tax and Accounting.

"John Moriarty will bring a wealth of leadership skills to the job,” said IRS Chief Counsel Mike Desmond. “Mr. Moriarty has been with the Office of Chief Counsel for over 29 years and is an outstanding choice for this important assignment. His many years of service to the Office of Chief Counsel and his extensive experience and strong technical knowledge have prepared him well to take over this role.”

The Income Tax and Accounting (ITA) Division in Washington, D.C., provides legal advisory services regarding fundamental rules of the federal tax system, including a wide variety of income tax and tax accounting issues.

Moriarty has served as deputy associate chief counsel (ITA) since April 2012. In 2017, he served as acting associate chief counsel, Passthroughs and Special Industries for 11 months. He has helped guide ITA through implementation of the recent Tax Cuts and Job Act (TCJA). Moriarty has been with the Office of Chief Counsel since 1990 and has held various positions in ITA, including branch chief, senior technician reviewer and attorney-advisor. Prior to joining the Office of Chief Counsel, Moriarty was a tax attorney with several private-sector organizations.

Moriarty received his Bachelor of Arts in statistics and international studies from American University. He received his Juris Doctor and a Master of Laws in taxation from Georgetown University.
