1. Security Summit Partners Mark Progress in Identity Theft Battle
The IRS, state tax agencies and private-sector industry leaders detailed their continued progress against tax-related identity theft and prepared additional safeguards for the 2018 filing season to curb refund fraud.
The latest IRS data shows significant improvements over the past year as fewer identity theft returns entered the tax system, fewer fraudulent refunds were issued and fewer taxpayers were reporting themselves as victims of identity theft.

3. PTIN Renewal Season Is Underway
Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) renewal season is open.
All PTINs expire on Dec. 31 and must be renewed for the 2018 filing season. You must have a valid PTIN if you plan to prepare any federal tax returns for compensation or you are an enrolled agent.
There is no fee for a 2018 PTIN.

4. Continuing Education: Get Your Credits with the IRS Nationwide Tax Forums Online
Tax professionals can earn continuing education credits with the IRS Nationwide Tax Forums Online (NTFO). The 17 self-study seminars, recorded at the 2017 IRS Nationwide Tax Forums, cover numerous topics including business use of the home, real estate, preparer and practitioner discipline, and changes to the Individual Tax Identification Number program.
The online forums are accredited with the IRS Return Preparer Office and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy and can be audited for free. For more, visit www.irstaxforumsonline.com.

5. Technical Guidance
Notice 2017-59 provides rules claimants must follow to submit a claim for refund pursuant to the temporary relief provided in section 3.02 of Notice 2017-30, 2017-21 I.R.B. 1248. A claimant may submit a refund claim for the section 4081(a)(1) tax imposed on undyed diesel fuel and kerosene for fuel that is 1) removed from a Milwaukee terminal; 2) entered into a Green Bay terminal within 24 hours; and 3) subsequently dyed and removed from the Green Bay terminal.
Notice 2017-64 provides a listing of dollar limitations applicable to qualified retirement plans as adjusted for cost-of-living adjustments for 2018.
Notice 2017-66 invites public power providers to submit applications for an allocation of the available authority (volume cap) to issue new clean renewable energy bonds under section 54C of the Code to finance qualified renewable energy facilities.
Revenue Procedure 2017-58 provides the 2018 cost-of-living adjustments for inflation for certain items, including the tax tables.
Revenue Ruling 2017-21 provides various prescribed rates for federal income tax purposes including the applicable federal interest rates, the adjusted applicable federal interest rates, the adjusted federal long-term rate, the adjusted federal long-term tax-exempt rate.
