IRS Announces Low Income Taxpayer Clinic Grant Recipients
WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced $10.72 million in matching grants to 129 recipients across the country for development, expansion or continuation of qualified Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs) for the 2016 grant year.
The IRS plans to award additional part-year matching grants pursuant to a supplemental application period open to qualifying organizations in certain identified underserved areas. For more see news release IR-2016-31.
LITCs are organizations that represent low income taxpayers in federal tax disputes with the IRS for free or for a nominal fee and provide tax education and outreach to taxpayers who speak English as a second language (ESL).
Through the LITC program, the IRS awards matching grants of up to $100,000 per year to qualifying organizations. The LITC program is a federal grant program administered by the Taxpayer Advocate Service, led by the National Taxpayer Advocate, Nina E. Olson. Although LITCs receive partial funding from the IRS, LITCs, their employees, and volunteers are independent from the IRS.

IRS Publication 4134, Low Income Taxpayer Clinic List, provides information about LITCs by geographic area, including contact information and details about the languages, in addition to English, in which each LITC offers services. Publication 5066 and Publication 4134 are available at IRS.gov.
The grant year began on Jan. 1 and ends on Dec. 31. A list of organizations awarded grants for the 2016 grant year can be found on IRS.gov.
