At-a-Glance Statement
Following discussion at the April 16, 2026 OPTN Board of Directors meeting, we are writing to share an important update for all liver transplant programs.
At its April 16, 2026 meeting, the OPTN Board approved a resolution clarifying that certain required roles for liver transplant programs fall within the OPTN Key Personnel framework. Specifically, the resolution:
- Designates the Director of Liver Transplant Anesthesia as Key Personnel
- Clarifies that the two qualified surgeons required for programs performing living donor liver recovery are considered Primary Liver Surgeons for the Living Donor Component (Key Personnel)
This action addresses prior ambiguity related to personnel change notification, coverage and continuity, and aligns liver program requirements with the broader Key Personnel framework.
What You Need To Do
If your program has not submitted the following roles to the OPTN, please submit the relevant applications in the OPTN Member Community Portal:
- Director of Liver Transplant Anesthesia (adult liver transplant programs)
- Qualified surgeons: Primary Liver Surgeon and second Primary Liver Surgeon for the Living Donor Component (if applicable)
If a role is currently vacant, please indicate that the position is vacant in an email to HRSA OPTN Member Compliance <OPTNMemberCompliance@hrsa.gov>.
Responses are due within 30 days by May 16, 2026.
