American Heart Month: Engage with Patients with Hypertension
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) provides these evidence-based tips that can support your patient engagement:
-
Consider your approach: Are you aware of your body language and are you at eye-level with your patient?
-
Hear from your patient: Do you encourage questions? Instead of asking a close-ended question like "Do you have any questions?" consider an open-ended question like "What questions do you have for me?"
-
Show that you are treating the whole person: Have you related high blood pressure to other conditions your patient faces? Are you ensuring continuity of care so that patients feel comfortable and are connected to follow-up care?
-
Help your patient understands and buy into their own care: Consider using the teach-back method to ensure that your patient understands what is going on with their health. For example, have them explain to you how they would tell their family about the visit.
Visit HRSA’s website for hypertension control data for HRSA-funded health centers and AHRQ’s website for more tools.
