Just released |
We are pleased to announce the release of historically enhanced 2016-2020 NSCH data files. This data release is a continuation of the improvements that were made to the 2021 NSCH data set released in October 2023. These revised datasets should be used when combining or comparing with the 2022 NSCH. We believe that these advancements enrich the utility of the NSCH to support the analytic needs of researchers, policy makers, and program administrators working in the field of maternal and child health. Please see a description of the changes to weighting and imputation, and other enhancements such as:
Overview of Changes to Weighting and Imputation
- Race/Ethnicity: Weighting and imputation by race and ethnicity were first revised for the 2022 National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) as part of multi-faceted efforts to improve consistency across federal surveys, and these changes have been applied retroactively to prior years of NSCH data. For additional information, please read the Weighting Revisions Technical Document and the 2022 NSCH Methodology Report.
- Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN): A weighting element for CSHCN that had limited value was removed in 2021, and these changes were applied retroactively to prior years of NSCH data. For additional information, please read the Weighting Revisions Technical Document.
Practical Recommendations and Conclusions
- Comparisons over time should only be made with data sets using the same approach. All historical files from 2016-2021 have now been re-released to enable consistent trending with the revised approach.
- With the exception of race and ethnicity and CSHCN, changes in prevalence estimates with the revised approach are generally small; there is larger magnitude and variability at the state-level. Two-year state-level estimates are encouraged to buffer changes and improve precision.
Other Enhancements
- BMICLASS (ages 6-9); the age range for BMICLASS data has been extended to include 6-9 year-olds (forthcoming analysis shows general consistency with measured data for this age range) [2022 enhancement]
- HEIGHT/WEIGHT (ages 6-17) – The child’s current height in centimeters and current weight in kilograms to enable analyses of height and weight for age [2022 enhancement]
- Race ‘alone or in combination’ flags for American Indian/Alaska Native (SC_AIAN), Asian (SC_ASIAN) and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (SC_NHPI) [2021 enhancement]
- Breastfeeding corrections: MCHB identified a discrepancy in reported values for breastfeeding (BREASTFEDEND_MO_S), first fed formula (FRSTFORMULA_MO_S) and first fed solids (FRSTSOLIDS_MO_S) [2022 correction]
