World AIDS Day - December 1

World AIDS Day Photos

To help us recognize World AIDS Day (Friday, December 1), submit photos of your health center staff, patients, or community members wearing red or attending a World AIDS Day event by Wednesday, December 6. We may share your pictures on TWM or through the Digest.

  • Submit your photos using the BPHC Contact Form (General/Other HRSA > Other Topics).
  • Mention World AIDS Day 2023.
  • Include the names and titles of people in the photo(s) and two or three sentences about the event as applicable.
  • Upload the photo and a completed Photo Release Form (PDF) for each person in the photo.

Grants.gov Outage and Updated Notice of Funding Opportunity Deadlines

Grants.gov will be unavailable due to a service outage between 12:01 a.m. ET on Saturday, October 28, and 11:59 p.m. ET, on Tuesday, October 31.

In response, we have extended the Grants.gov and HRSA's Electronic Handbooks (EHBs) application deadlines for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Service Area Competition funding opportunity (HRSA-24-071) and the FY 2024 State and Regional Primary Care Association Cooperative Agreements funding opportunity (HRSA-24-080).

The new deadlines for both:

  • Grants.gov: Friday, November 3, by 11:59 p.m. ET
  • EHBs: Monday, December 4, by 5:00 p.m. ET

Deadline Reminder: FY 2024 Budget Period Progress Report Noncompeting Continuation for April 1 Budget Period Starts

Budget Period Progress Report (BPR) submissions for Health Center Program award recipients with a budget period start date of April 1 are due in EHBs by 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, November 3. Technical assistance (TA) materials are available on the BPR TA webpage.

Learn the purpose of the Operational Site Visit (OSV), what to expect during your OSV, and hear directly from expert consultants in the Clinical, Financial, and Governance areas. We encourage all health centers to join – especially if you are scheduled for an OSV in FY 2024!

Policy Tip: Clinical Staffing

The Examples of Credentialing and Privileging Documentation resource complements the Site Visit Protocol by providing common examples of credentialing and privileging documentation methods and sources. Health centers may use other documentation to credential and privilege health center providers as long as there is consistency with the Health Center Program Compliance Manual and the health center's procedures. Site visit teams can use the resource when reviewing a health center's clinical staff file samples.


Uniform Data System Preliminary Reporting Environment Coming Soon

The Uniform Data System (UDS) Preliminary Reporting Environment (PRE) will become available on Friday, October 27. The PRE allows health center awardees and look-alikes early access to enter and validate data before the UDS reporting period begins on Monday, January 1, 2024. You can access the PRE through the EHBs reporting portal. Two offline reporting tools are also available to help you submit UDS data: offline Excel and HTML files.

National Advisory Council on Migrant Health Meeting

The National Advisory Council on Migrant Health (NACMH) will hold an in-person meeting at HRSA headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, on November 1-2. The event is open to the public. Visit the NACMH webpage for the agenda and registration.

NACMH advises and makes recommendations to the HHS Secretary on policy, program development, and other topics related to Migrant Health Centers and other organizations that serve migratory and seasonal agricultural workers and their families.


Did You Share Your Training Needs?

The National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) invites health center staff and leaders to share your training and TA needs through their brief survey. It should take less than 15 minutes.


HRSA Releases National Survey of Children’s Health Dataset

HRSA recently released the annual National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) dataset. This is the largest, most comprehensive national- and state-level data for key measures of child health and well-being. Watch and share HRSA’s NSCH 90-second video so that more people learn about and use this valuable resource.


Research Funding Opportunity Using of All of Us Data

NIH’s All of Us Research Program has more than 702,000 participants enrolled, with a goal of enrolling 1 million participants. All of Us works with more than 100 funded partner organizations and has 810 sites collecting biosamples and physical measurements. HRSA-supported health centers are one example – you helped make this happen!

NIH recently announced a funded research opportunity. They are soliciting white papers supporting various areas of interest. Funded organizations will help design and implement strategies to raise awareness of the program, drive enrollment, foster communication with participants, and engage the research community to use the data gathered.


Breast Cancer Awareness Month

TOMORROW: The Role of Clinicians in Promoting Awareness of Alcohol as a Risk Factor for Cancer

Our webinar will focus on the correlation between alcohol consumption and cancers. We’re featuring Dr. Kara Wiseman, assistant professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and a former Cancer Prevention Fellow at the National Cancer Institute. She’ll discuss how and why drinking small amounts of alcohol increases the risk of cancers, including breast cancer in women.

Screening and Addressing Substance Use in School-Based Health Centers

Why are teens experiencing an increase in overdose deaths (PDF) compared to the overall population, and what can health center staff at school-based service sites (SBSS) do to help prevent them? Our featured speaker from NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse will describe how the drug overdose crisis affects teens, the role of counterfeit pills and fentanyl, and how SBSS are uniquely positioned to address teen substance use. We will also share validated evidence-based resources and teen substance use screening tools and steps to respond to the screening results. You’ll learn the importance of stigma-free language, with examples of terms to use and avoid.

Tobacco Cessation for Homeless Individuals and Public Housing Residents: A Brief Review

The National Health Care for the Homeless Council (NHCHC) and the National Center for Health in Public Housing (NCHPH) will discuss the importance of smoking cessation for homeless individuals and residents of public housing served by health centers. They will provide clinicians, health educators, and Community Health Workers with information on the seven FDA-approved cessation medications, as well as proven behavioral counseling techniques to help individuals stay quit permanently.
