BPHC Welcomes Back Jim Macrae!
Welcome back to BPHC Associate Administrator Jim Macrae from his assignment at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)! Last September, Jim was tapped by CDC Director Rochelle Walensky to be part of a team implementing changes to modernize and move the agency forward. The team’s aim was to prioritize public health action to help equitably protect and promote the health of the American people.
While he was away, we were proud to announce Jim’s 2022 Presidential Rank Award — Distinguished Service, the highest recognition in the Senior Executive Service!
Thank you to BPHC Deputy Associate Administrator Tonya Bowers for leading the bureau during Jim’s detail and to Office Directors, who provided additional support.

New Password Requirements
The security of user accounts/passwords is of the upmost priority and concern for HRSA. Passwords are used to gain access to your account, which may contain sensitive information. Having an easily guessable password can pose a significate threat to the security of HRSA and our customers’ vital information.
To assist in increasing password security, HRSA’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) plans to implement additional password change rejection categories. This change will take place on Sunday, March 19. After that date, your password may be rejected if it contains any of these:
- User’s name
- Common words (i.e., Password, P@ssW0rd)
- Keyboard patterns (i.e., 1qaz@WSX)
- Alphabetic patterns (i.e., abcdefg, @bcdefg)
- Numerical patterns (i.e., 12345678, 1234%^&*)
If you have problems resetting your password, submit a ServiceNow ticket. For more information, see the OIT Alert.

Getting to Know: Data
Editor’s note: This monthly column will help you better understand functional areas across BPHC and how they work together to support our mission.
Today’s Getting to Know column features OSBO’s Data Division. Read the complete interview with Data Division leaders, excerpted below.
Data Division is part of OSBO. We spoke with them to get a better understanding of their work.
How does the work of the Data Division relate to BPHC's mission?
Our goal is to make sure that we reduce data problems, and we promote data transparency. We want to make the data usable across the bureau to answer questions and inform decisions. There are groups across the bureau who are using data to help make decisions, but we're the frontline: we make sure the data is sound, accessible, trustworthy, and has integrity. We also make sure the bureau is following the U.S. government’s standards for data collection, use, retention, etc.
What job is similar to the role the Data Division plays in BPHC?
I would say we’re like architects or engineers. We build a foundation for data. We support its development. We take the feedback from others into account as we make sure that the structure is set up in a way that it can function.
If the Data Division had a slogan, what would it be?
Our goal is to “work smarter not harder.” That’s our motto because a major goal of our division, and of data modernization overall, is to get data to a point where it can be used without worry. We want there to be no question if the data is accurate or not. Also, a huge part of our work is automation — automating processes so staff are not doing manual, repetitive work. We’re trying to work hard to put the structure in place so if you need the data, you can get it.
Read other columns in the Getting to Know Functional Area/Division series and email BPHC Insider to request that your division be considered for a future Getting to Know column. We’ll follow up with your leadership.
