Getting to Know: Michael “Mike” J. Koscinski
Editor’s note: We’ve refreshed our list of Getting to Know You questions. Interested in participating in a Getting to Know You column for the first or second time? Take a look at the revised questions to see what's involved and check out our Getting to Know BPHC Staff page.
Meet Michael “Mike” Koscinski, Public Health Analyst, Quality, OQI:
|
When did you join the Bureau of Primary Health Care? How does your current role contribute to the Health Center Program? November 21, 2022.
I am part of a great team in OQI that provides training and technical assistance (T/TA) to health centers. I manage a T/TA contract for health centers that seek to integrate behavioral health care services into their standard clinical and business practices.
What are some things your co-workers would be surprised to learn about you, for example, a hidden talent? I take guitar lessons and serve as a lector for my church, which I’ve done for many years.
What non-work topic would you consider yourself an expert (or almost-expert) on? Landscape photography and gardening.
What is your favorite sport or sports team? New York Yankees and New York Giants.
What is your favorite food and why? Spaghetti with olive oil because it’s quick. The olive oil is healthy for you. But around the holidays, I love to eat Polish kielbasa and Polish babka bread, which is loaded with butter and tastes great. I have a recipe if you want it, but it’s not for beginners.
What has been your most rewarding or impactful experience in the federal government? The trainings I did for American Indians and Alaska Natives. They taught me so much in return. I learned so much about resilience, respect for elders, respect for the land, honoring your ancestors.
Learn more about Mike, and email BPHC Insider to submit your name for a future Getting to Know.

BPHC 2023 Training Plan
As you heard at the January 18 BPHC All-Hands, DWM has published the BPHC Training Plan! This customizable tool will help you address your training and professional development needs. It contains a list of opportunities to enhance your learning and development and support your individual development plan (e-IDP) goals. Download and save the document so you can revisit it throughout the year and include it in your PMAP discussions with your supervisor.
DEIA Challenge
As part of BPHC's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA), we are launching BPHC's first ever DEIA Challenge! This challenge consists of 10 activities that will assist you in learning more about DEIA. You can choose to do as many activities as you'd like: Review BPHC’s 2023 DEIA Challenge and think about how you might be able to apply what you learn to the work you do in BPHC.
DWM is excited to hear about your experiences, so please forward your completed worksheet to Allison Smith by Friday, December 29.
