Million Hearts Hypertension Control Challenge

2022 Million Hearts Hypertension Control Challenge Now Open
Has your health center made significant progress in helping patients get hypertension under control? Consider submitting your application for CDC’s 2022 Million Hearts Hypertension Control Challenge. Applicants must have achieved hypertension control rates of at least 80% for a 12-month period. The website includes rules and eligibility requirements.

The Hypertension Control Challenge is a key component of the Million Hearts 2027 initiative. It identifies and spotlights health care professionals, practices, and systems that have achieved nationally laudable hypertension control rates. Several HRSA-funded health centers have been recognized as past Hypertension Control Champions and Hypertension Control Exemplars.

NAMCS

Health Centers Encouraged to Participate in National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey
CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics invited select health centers to participate in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS). If your health center received an invitation, we encourage you to participate!

The survey results have been a resource to the health center community, health care researchers, and policy makers. The data highlight the important work and current needs of health centers and inform actions to address emerging public health needs. They provide detailed insight into ambulatory care at the level of individual visits, which complements aggregate, health-center level information from the Uniform Data System (UDS). However, NAMCS data will be confidential, and their use limited, with any data made public being aggregated to maintain confidentiality.

If your health center is invited, email NAMCSHealthCenters@cdc.gov to confirm your participation status and continue to respond to emails and phone calls for further instructions. Those who participate may be eligible for compensation up to $10,000 to help defray any possible expenses due to participation. Learn more on CDC's site.

What's New

Fiscal Year 2023 Budget Period Progress Report Non-Competing Continuation
HRSA released the fiscal year (FY) 2023 Budget Period Progress Report (BPR) Non-Competing Continuation (5-H80-23-001) for Health Center Program award recipients with a January 1, 2023, budget period start date. BPR submissions are due in HRSA’s Electronic Handbooks (EHBs) by 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, August 19.

Technical assistance (TA) materials, as well as a listing of deadlines for all FY 2023 BPRs, are available on the BPR TA webpage. If you have pre-award or application questions, please use the BPHC Contact Form.

Reminder: Health centers that recently received a 12-month extension Notice of Award with a new period of performance end date that does not end in FY 2023 will submit an FY 2023 BPR.

Deadline Reminder: Service Area Competition Applications for February 1 Starts
Service Area Competition (SAC) HRSA-23-019 applications for February 1 starts are due in:

  • Grants.gov: by 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday, July 18.
  • EHBs: by 5:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, August 17.

TA materials are available on the SAC TA webpage.

Corrections to Service Type Information in the Service Area Announcement Table
Information listed in the Service Type column for several announced service areas under SAC notices of funding opportunity (NOFO) HRSA-23-018, HRSA-23-019, and HRSA-23-020 was updated to correct data errors. Check the Service Type column in the Service Area Announcement Table (SAAT) prior to submitting your application in EHBs to confirm the services align with projected patients on Form 1A: General Information Worksheet. This is important to ensure you meet eligibility requirements outlined in the SAC NOFOs.

Preparing for the Workforce Well-being Survey
HRSA plans to field a survey later this year to gather insights on health center workforce well-being. Learn more by watching the June 14 Today with Macrae webcast—fast-forward to the one-hour, nine-minute mark.

We hope as many HRSA-supported health center staff as possible will participate. Our contractor—JSI—is gathering email addresses now to set up unique links to the survey. Last week, we sent a bulletin to health center leaders encouraging them to look for and respond to JSI’s request for a list of staff email addresses. Email addresses and other identifying information associated with these unique links will be disconnected from survey results; all participants and their answers will be kept confidential.

If you have questions or concerns, please use the BPHC Contact Form. Select “Other Topics” under the “General/Other HRSA” category. You can also call 877-464-4772, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET, Monday-Friday (except federal holidays).

Certified Application Counselor Designated Organizations Application Open Season
Organizations operating in a Federally-Facilitated Marketplace (FFM) state that want to provide enrollment assistance to consumers for plan year 2023 must apply to CMS to become a certified application counselor designated organization (CDO), if they are not already a CDO. Open season for CDO applications ends on Wednesday, August 31. CDOs oversee certified application counselors, who are trained and able to help consumers seeking health coverage options through the Marketplace. Learn more.

For additional questions, contact CMS at CACQuestions@cms.hhs.gov. Please include your organization’s name and address in the body of your email.

Workforce

NHSC

Pass it Forward: Become a Mentor or Advisor
Are you a National Health Service Corps (NHSC) member or alumnus? If so, we need you for the NHSC Pathway Readiness TA Initiative, a five-year program of HRSA’s Bureau of Health Workforce. It helps prepare NHSC Scholarship Program and NHSC Students to Service Loan Repayment Program participants for their service at NHSC-approved sites by:

  • Building their capacity to eliminate health disparities through community engagement and advocacy.
  • Building their resiliency to stressors that can arise from routine practice and during a public health crisis.

You can support the initiative by serving on committees, assisting with trainings, and mentoring current participants. Contact the project coordinator with questions.

Self Care Checklist

Self-Care for the Health Center Workforce
Self-care involves a combination of tools and activities individuals use to manage and resolve stress. A critical, but often overlooked, aspect of self-care is the need for organizations to take the lead in creating an environment that lessens stressors and is conducive to practicing these individual techniques.

This new publication by the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved's (ACU) STAR2 Center offers a starting point for health center leadership and staff to understand and implement techniques, tools, and practices for self-care. ACU is a HRSA-funded NTTAP.

Developing Clinical Leaders at Every Level of Your Health Center
It is crucial for health centers to develop leaders at all levels, and ACU’s STAR2 Center will provide practical strategies to help health centers build leadership skills for all types of clinical providers in a training that is part of ACU’s 2022 Conference, “Resilience & Transformation in Care.” Join the training in-person in Washington, D.C., or online. You’ll explore how to develop career paths and opportunities for advancement for rising clinical leaders. This free training is from 2:00-3:15 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 2. Contact Narine Hovnanian to register.
