Today, BPHC is launching a new Section 508 Remediation Process that shifts remediation from HRSA's Office of Information Technology (OIT) to HHS Accessibility Services. Starting immediately, OIT will no longer accept submissions for Section 508 remediation. OSBO Communications will manage the new process.
Section 508 remediation is the process of making electronic and information technology accessible.
It's the law, it's everyone's responsibility, and it ensures access for all.
In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to require federal agencies to make electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Under Section 508, agencies must give employees and members of the public with disabilities access to information comparable to the access available to others. Learn more about Section 508 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Moving forward, you will submit completed products you create to the Section 508 Point of Contact (POC) in your office or functional area. Your POC will review content for Section 508 compliance. Once reviewed, your POC will then submit all content with the intake form to HHS Accessibility Services for Section 508 review or remediation.
After a review or remediation is completed, HHS Accessibility Services will share a report with the POC and offer product-specific training to help with the production of future products. Note: Only POCs may submit requests for Section 508 review or remediation. Please contact Whitney Gray with any questions.
Three exceptions:
-
Content to be posted on HRSA’s website: POCs will submit all web-related products to the web team.
Please contact the web team with questions related to products for the HRSA website.
-
External presentations: If you are giving an external presentation, you will send the slide deck to your POC for a preliminary Section 508 review. Once that review is complete, you will submit your presentation to the Speakers Bureau at least three weeks in advance of the presentation.
Email the Speakers Bureau if you have questions.
Section 508 applies to all:
- Documents, audio, and video files that are downloadable from HRSA’s website.
- Content distributed through BPHC electronic newsletters intended for internal or external audiences that is first posted on HRSA’s website and the linked to in newsletters or bulletins
- Presentation materials (e.g., slide decks, posters) shared during a speaking engagement to an external audience or shared during a webcast to an internal or external audience.
