Throughout the National Health Service Corps’ (NHSC) 50-year history, health centers have been essential partners in a shared mission of caring for the nation’s underserved and rural communities. Today, 56% of NHSC clinicians and 26% of Nurse Corps participants serve at health centers.
Both programs are now accepting applications for loan repayment awards. With $1 billion in additional funding through the American Rescue Plan, HRSA is prepared to make a record number of awards. But with only a few weeks to go in the application cycles, we are well below our target for applications.
Last year, NHSC was able to award all eligible applicants, regardless of their site’s HPSA score. HRSA awarded clinicians serving at health centers with HPSA scores as low as 4, and would have awarded even lower if more eligible applicants had applied for a loan repayment program. We made the largest numbers of awards in our history last year.
HRSA is asking health centers to help us reach our goal of awarding a record number of clinicians again this year. Specifically, you can help in the following ways:

Encourage your eligible clinicians to apply. There is still time to begin an application before the program deadlines. See below for more resources and tools to share with your clinicians.

Complete employment verifications for your clinicians with applications in progress. Applications cannot be submitted without input from employers, and it only takes a few minutes.

The NHSC loan repayment programs award up to $100,000 to repay school debt. The Nurse Corps loan repayment program pays up to 85% of school debt.
