Happy Holidays from the Bureau of Primary Health Care

Dear Colleagues,

During this holiday season, on behalf of the entire bureau, I want to express yet again how thankful we are for the work you do every day! Thanks to your tremendous efforts, tens of millions of people who are medically underserved continue to receive high-quality primary health care and millions of people across the country are vaccinated against COVID-19.

This is a time to both reflect on our successes and to look ahead to the new year and the opportunities it will bring. I am excited for 2022 and I hope you are, too! I wish all of you the best this holiday season.

Happy holidays!

Jim Macrae

Update

COVID-19 Survey Change for this Week
In the Health Center COVID-19 Survey you’ll receive Friday, we will ask you to let us know if you hosted family vaccination clinics and, if so, how many. The change (in bold) will be made in existing questions 12 and 12a:

  • Did your health center utilize mobile vans or host pop-up, school-based, and/or family vaccination clinics to enhance access to COVID-19 vaccination sites in the last two weeks?
  • [If you answer Yes to the previous question] How many mobile van, pop-up, school-based, and/or family vaccination clinics did you host in the last two weeks for COVID-19 vaccinations?

Please note BPHC’s definition of a family vaccination clinic: Family vaccination clinics are intended for the whole family—offering primary vaccinations and booster shots, and the pediatric vaccine for kids ages 5-11. Family vaccination clinics include events hosted on-site and off-site (e.g., mobile van, pop-up, or school-based clinics).

We will update the Survey User Guide by noon on Friday, December 17.

Share Your Story

Family Vaccination Days
See Friday’s bulletin for information about the White House’s announcement of Family Vaccination Days. We hope that you’ll share stories profiling the ways your health center is holding Family Vaccination Days. We encourage you to use the #familyvax hashtag to promote your events and efforts on social media.

You can also send us your stories:

You may see your story featured in our newsletter (see a story about Jefferson Comprehensive Health Center, Inc. in the COVID-19 section), on a webcast, or via HRSA social media.

Also note that CDC recently authorized Pfizer-BioNTech booster shots for kids age 16-17. See more in our COVID-19 section.

What's New

2021 Health Center Patient Survey Participation
We encourage health centers that have been invited to participate in the 2021 Health Center Patient Survey (HCPS) to take part. The HCPS provides valuable data on patients' experiences with the care and services they receive at health centers. These data help us understand the needs of health center patients, help identify program improvement and funding opportunities, and support important research and evaluation efforts to advance the Health Center Program.

The HCPS is taking place now through January 2022. See our HCPS webpage for more information and results from the 2014 HCPS. Send inquiries to bphchcps@hrsa.gov.

Health Centered On

Health centers across the nation have distinguished themselves in responding to the current pandemic. Here’s a recent example:

Providing Vaccinations in Rural Mississippi
Jefferson Comprehensive Health Center, Inc. (JCHC) has conducted extensive outreach to increase vaccination rates throughout rural Jefferson County, MS. Their efforts included working with Jefferson-Franklin County Correctional Facility, the Adams County Jail, housing authorities, school districts, town squares, local churches, and rural districts. Their work has helped their county, which is predominantly Black, become the most vaccinated in all of Mississippi.

JCHC staff have found building relationships through earning trust to be key to their success. For example, staff call patients when they haven’t seen them in a while. This trust, built over time, has helped JCHC reach more people to administer COVID-19 vaccinations.

JCHC

JCHC’s mobile medical units have also greatly contributed to their efforts, allowing staff the opportunity to provide care out in the community. As of Wednesday, December 8, JCHC has given 7,535 COVID-19 vaccines to 4,865 people living in Jefferson and surrounding counties; 3,380 vaccines were given remotely through JCHC’s mobile units, and 583 vaccines were given to children or adolescents.

Learn more about JCHC’s work.

New Recommendation: Team-Based Care as a Way to Improve Blood Pressure Control
The Community Preventive Services Task Force recommends team-based care to improve blood pressure control. A systematic review of evidence from 54 studies shows team-based care increases the proportion of patients with controlled blood pressure and reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure. A separate review of economic evidence from 27 studies indicates team-based care is also cost-effective. Learn more and access relevant resources.
