National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day - group of African American people

On February 7, HRSA’s HIV/AIDS Bureau will recognize National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). The 2020 theme for NBHAAD is “We’re in This, Together.” In 2018, black/African American individuals comprised 47.1 percent of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) clients. Approximately 84.1 percent of black/African American clients receiving RWHAP HIV medical care were virally suppressed in 2018.

Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program Now Open

What’s new with the Nurse Corps LRP this year? It includes additional funding for psychiatric nurse practitioners. As part of HRSA's efforts to combat the nation's opioid crisis, special funding has been provided to increase evidence-based care to patients in need of opioid use disorder and behavioral health treatment. The program offers loan repayment to registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, and nursing faculty in exchange for a two-year service commitment at a health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses, or, for nurse faculty, an eligible school of nursing.

Accepting applications through March 12, 2020. Find out more about the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program.

HRSA Supports Health Centers in Improving Quality of Care

HRSA-funded health centers impact

Bureau of Primary Health Care Associate Administrator Jim Macrae recently published an article in the Independence Blue Cross Foundation’s Reaching Communities edition of the Journal of Change. The theme of the issue is the history and impact of the Health Center Program, and the article describes HRSA’s work to improve quality of care at health centers through efforts such as the Diabetes Quality Improvement Initiative and the Quality Improvement Awards.

Rural Communities Help Themselves

Rural Partnership Development Meeting - HRSA Administrator Tom Engels

Saddled with chronic health workforce shortages, widespread substance misuse and high HIV transmission rates, rural care networks – often staffed by volunteers and peer counselors – increasingly are the backbone of care delivery in small town America, HRSA Administrator Tom Engels told some 500 conference attendees at the Rockville Hilton last month.

The audience consisted of participants in three outreach programs run by HRSA's Federal Office of Rural Health Policy. The programs have infused some $29 million in seed money into remote pockets of the country to help advocates and providers form local healthcare partnerships.
