National Suicide Prevention Week
This annual observance occurs September 8-14. Approximately 45% of suicide victims had contact with primary care providers within one month of suicide. Visit HRSA’s webpage for resources you can trust.

One resource that may be particularly useful for health center staff is Suicide Safe, a suicide prevention app available from SAMHSA. It helps health care providers integrate suicide prevention strategies into their practice and address suicide risk among their patients. It includes patient and provider educational materials, a treatment locator, sample interactive cases, and conversation starters.

Hurricane Dorian Reporting
HRSA will ask Primary Care Associations (PCAs) to take the lead in gathering critical health center information and reporting impact data back to us on the operational status of delivery sites. Read the bulletin we sent last week. For health centers in areas impacted by Hurricane Dorian (i.e., Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina), we ask that you report site-level operational status to your PCA.

Please also visit the HRSA Health Center Program Emergency Preparedness and Recovery Resources webpage for important guidance documents and resources to help health centers, including information on change in scope for temporary sites, 340B Program enrollment under emergency declarations, and FTCA coverage in emergency events, including volunteer health professionals.

There are two places where you can find information about webinars:

  • The Training and Technical Assistance section of the Digest (in the sidebar on the right) has two sections.
    • The top section lists ALL of the webinars that will take place within a week of when we send out the Digest (including the following Tuesday). For example, today’s issue includes everything taking place before Wednesday, September 4.
    • The bottom section (“Upcoming”) lists select webinars scheduled further out.

Workforce

Shortage Designation Modernization Project: Auto-HPSA National Update
Last week, HRSA’s Bureau of Health Workforce updated all automatically designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (Auto-HPSAs). With this update, the Auto-HPSAs are now--and for the first time--scored electronically instead of manually, streamlining the process and ensuring that all HPSAs nationwide are in a single online system.

All Auto-HPSA organizations have the opportunity to submit rescore requests via the online Auto-HPSA portal (view instructions).

HRSA will use updated scores for the FY 2020 National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program application cycle, which will open in February 2020.

Visit the Shortage Designation Modernization Project for more information about the update.
