HRSA BPHC Primary Health Care Digest

August 6, 2019

Happy National Health Center Week!
This year’s theme is America’s Health Centers: Rooted in Communities. It’s a great opportunity to recognize the nearly 1,400 health centers that operate approximately 12,000 sites across the country. Over the past 20 years, health centers have more than tripled the number of patients they serve, from almost 9 million in 1998 to more than 28 million in 2018. And, to the more than 236,000 providers and staff who dedicate their lives to helping patients access quality, value-based health care, we celebrate how you are rooted in your communities every single day.

Watch our Chalk Talk video about the origin and growth of the HRSA Health Center Program.

Look out for news and events throughout the week on HRSA’s social media channels. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Health Center Week Broad Impacts

Ready? Set. Release!
The new Uniform Data System (UDS) data are out and show that health centers continue to provide increased access to high quality, value-based, comprehensive primary care for their patients and communities. See the 2018 Health Center Program national-level grantee data from the UDS. Health centers treat one in 12 people nationwide, one in every nine children, and are increasingly well-positioned to meet the nation’s most common and pressing health care needs, as well as emerging health priorities.

In 2018:

  • 93% of health centers provided mental health counseling and treatment.
  • 67% of health centers provided substance use disorder (SUD) services.
  • One in six people living with HIV received care from a HRSA-funded health center.

Telehealth

Comments Requested: Connected Care Pilot Program
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), under its existing Rural Health Care Program authority, is proposing a three-year, $100 million Connected Care Pilot program that would support bringing telehealth services directly to low-income patients and veterans. It would provide an 85% discount on connectivity for broadband-enabled telehealth services that connect patients directly to their doctors and are used to treat a wide range of health conditions. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) adopted by the Commission seeks comments on the new program, particularly the appropriate budget, duration, and structure of the pilot. To find out more, including comment deadlines, see the announcement in the Federal Register.
