Review Process for Service Area Competition or Renewal of Designation Applications
Last year, HRSA created this graphic, which illustrates what to expect after submitting a Service Area Competition (SAC) or Renewal of Designation (RD) application to HRSA. Take a look to learn more about the updated HRSA review process.

A new quick reference guide tells SAC and RD applicants how to manage correspondence requests from HRSA about their application. It will help you respond quickly to the 14-day turnaround time in EHBs.

For more details, check out our FY 2019 SAC and RD application and review award process Frequently Asked Questions.

NIH HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-termSM) Initiative Funding Opportunity
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) at NIH published an announcement that focuses on improving treatments for opioid misuse and addiction, a HEAL research priority area.

To test the effectiveness of combining behavioral interventions, which can include complementary health approaches, with medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD), NCCIH has issued “Behavioral Research to Improve MAT: Behavioral and Social Interventions to Improve Adherence to Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorders” (RFA-AT-19-006). This funding opportunity announcement is meant to study whether interventions such as mindfulness meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy, or multi-disciplinary rehabilitation improve adherence to MAT, improve MAT outcomes, and reduce relapse in individuals seeking treatment for OUD. Apply by 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, February 8.

Learn more about additional HEAL grant opportunities supported by NCCIH.

Resources

January is National Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention Month
We share these resources to inform health centers’ role in preventing human trafficking:

No-Cost Clinical Consultation Available on Substance Use Management
Health center providers can get advice on treating substance use disorders (including OUD and mental health conditions) through the Clinician Consultation Center’s Substance Use Warmline. Get real-time clinical consultation from a multi-disciplinary team of experts on topics such as assessing complex patient needs; establishing pain management strategies; and providing MAT. Connect to the Warmline’s peer-to-peer consultation and decision support by phone toll-free at 855-300-3595 or upload patient cases securely online. The Warmline operates from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday.

Available for Health Centers: Waiting Room Video Shown to Positively Impact Viral Suppression
CDC has posted the Taking Care of Me video intervention developed for people living with HIV from diverse cultural backgrounds. This 29-minute waiting room video is appropriate for HIV clinics and other HIV community-based agencies. It focuses on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, retention in care, and sexual risk reduction. Download it or learn more.

The video was evaluated using a quasi-experimental trial among all patients attending two HIV clinics during a 10-month period. The evaluation, published in PLOS One, showed that there was an increase of prescriptions of ARTs to patients exposed to the video and an overall improvement in viral suppression at the clinics.

Improving Cervical Cancer Screening Rates: Perspectives from a Health Center and a Health Center Controlled Network
In honor of Cervical Health Awareness month, HRSA will host a webinar for health centers to explore perspectives from La Red Health Center and OCHIN, Inc., on initiatives to improve cervical cancer screening rates. We’ll share a recording of this webinar in a future Digest.

We encourage health centers to attend an upcoming open forum hosted by NCQA’s Government PCMH Recognition Programs (GRIP), which will address questions related to NCQA’s PCMH standards, applications, and survey process.

Patient Safety Two Decades After To Err Is Human
In 1999, The Institute of Medicine report To Err is Human sparked the modern patient safety movement by highlighting the devastating effects of adverse events in health care. In the decades since, various initiatives implemented across all care settings aimed to keep patients safe and improve health care quality. So, where are we now? Join the ECRI Institute’s next Patient Safety Leadership Series webinar to find out:

Tuesday, February 5
2:00-3:00 p.m. ET
Register here

Two internationally recognized patient safety experts will explore what health care entities have learned since the report, how the patient safety movement has progressed over that time, and what health centers and free clinics can do to continue improvements in the future. Specific areas covered include test tracking and follow-up, tracking patient referrals, and follow-up after patient hospitalizations. References to tools and resources will also be provided.
