New Supplemental Funding Opportunity:
Advancing Precision Medicine
Selected health centers received invitations to apply to the fiscal year (FY) 2018
Advancing Precision Medicine (APM) Supplemental Funding Opportunity. This one-time supplement will support eligible health
centers with demonstrated capacity to participate in the All of Us Research
Program (AoU). Health centers
will use APM funding to support patient enrollment in AoU, including community
outreach and enhancing health information exchange capacity to share patient
data with AoU.
A total of $21 million is available for APM in FY 2018. Selected health centers may
request up to $375,000. Applications are due August 20 at 5:00 p.m. ET. Awards are expected

Saturday is
World Hepatitis Day
More than 300 million people worldwide are unaware they are living
with viral hepatitis. It is important to identify those who are undiagnosed and
link them to care. Health centers are on the frontlines, serving populations at
increased risk for viral hepatitis and providing comprehensive care to
individuals with multiple chronic conditions, making them uniquely positioned
to screen and treat patients with viral hepatitis. In recognition of World Hepatitis
Day—Saturday, July 28—we encourage screening for viral hepatitis B
and C, as both can become chronic, life-long infections that lead to serious
health problems. For more information on viral hepatitis, please visit the CDC website and
the BPHC
webpage on hepatitis.
Second Webinar
in August for the Service Area Needs Assessment Methodology Prototype
HRSA is
exploring the feasibility of developing a Service Area Needs Assessment
Methodology (SANAM) that would leverage public data sources to calculate an
unmet need score that considers access to primary care services and the health
status of a given ZIP code and/or service area. The SANAM would support the
quantification of need to potentially support HRSA decision-making. A number of
SANAM prototypes have been developed and tested by the MITRE Corporation, and
HRSA is considering options for implementation.
HRSA is hosting a second webinar in August for
participants who were not able to join the first webinar on July 16. The webinar
will describe the SANAM process to date and the prototypes under consideration.
An open feedback and Q&A session will follow. Please watch the PHC Digest
for upcoming webinar time and date information.

The third
webinar in ECRI Institute’s Patient Safety Leadership Speaker Series, presented
on HRSA’s behalf, will address communication challenges and strategies
clinicians and organizations can implement to improve the quality of care for
communication-vulnerable patients. The webinar will provide references to
relevant resources and tools.

Integrating Infectious Disease Prevention and
Treatment into the Opioid Response
The HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health’s Office of
HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Policy and the HHS Office on Women’s Health
recently sponsored a workshop at
the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to explore the
infectious disease consequences of the opioid crisis and consider opportunities
to better integrate effective responses. View a detailed summary of the
proceedings. It provides expert opinion on the major challenges and
opportunities relating to infectious diseases and can serve as a strategic
action and planning resource for communities.
